The theme of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise is a group of four anthropomorphic turtles who are trained in the art of Ninjutsu by their sensei, Master Splinter. They are named after four Italian Renaissance artists: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. The turtles live in the sewers of New York City and use their skills to fight against various villains and criminal organizations, most notably the Shredder and his Foot Clan. The franchise also includes themes of friendship, teamwork, and coming of age. The turtles also have a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the innocent.
